I understand that the school board trustees are in the process of updating the strategic plan and superintendent’s scorecard. I am writing to request that you advocate for adding special education related measures and goals to the plan and scorecard. I’ve attached a document with a set of recommendations from the Coalition for Special Education Equity that I hope you can use in your discussions around this topic.
We believe that support for children with disabilities in Austin ISD needs improvement and including special education related goals and measures at the strategic level along with making needed changes in increasing meaningful inclusion, providing open and transparent communication, better integrating bilingual supports, and fixing staff retention and recruitment are essential to improving outcomes for our children.
